Our sessions provide practical, hands-on, curriculum aligned strategies that can be easily incorporated into the classroom.

What We Do

  • Presented in partnership with Fair Chance Learning, A New Digital Literacy is a CanCode funded professional learning program for Canadian educators that offers a transformative and sustainable approach to learning. The program will equip educators with the knowledge to empower students with the digital skills to thrive in the globally connected, technology rich world, while helping develop the critical, computational, and design thinking skills needed to take them from tech consumer to innovator. Educators will take-away ready-to use curriculum aligned resources and challenges to use with their students right away in their classroom.

  • Grade 10 – Grade 12 educators
  • Learn how to facilitate a student-led design thinking challenge. Rooted in empathetic design, this process leads students through problem solving from predicting solutions, to testing, to revision, to deployment. Help students develop digital skills and learn how to incorporate open source data to expand the possibilities for inquiry across disciplines at the secondary level.

Living Space

  • Grade 6 – Grade 9 educators
  • This professional learning will support educators who wish to run Let¡¯s Talk Science latest action project: Living Space ¨C exploring the optimal environmental conditions for life. This action project was developed with the Canadian Space Agency as part of the upcoming International Space Station mission. Funding for this project has been provided by The Government of Canada as part of their CanCode program.

Nurturing Students¡¯ Inquisitive Minds with STEM

  • Early Years – Grade 3 educators
  • This professional learning session will provide Early Years and Kindergarten to Grade 3 educators opportunities to participate in hands-on/minds-on strategies that will develop student's inquiry and problem-solving skills.
    Participants will:
    • Gain hands-on/minds-on experience with student-centered, curriculum-aligned resources.
    • Explore scientific inquiries that enhance students¡¯ ability to observe, predict, sort and classify, compare and contrast, and draw conclusions.
    • Participate in design and build challenges that support the development of students¡¯ problem identification, designing, planning, creating, testing, and evaluating skills.
    • Learn how skills related to understanding decomposition, abstraction, pattern recognition, and algorithmic thinking support the development of students¡¯ computational thinking skills.
    • Collaborate with colleagues and engage in meaningful discussions that support program planning in early STEM education.

STEM Inquiry in the Early Years – Grade 3 Classroom

  • Early Years – Grade 3 educators
  • Join colleagues for a professional learning session and participate in hands-on/minds-on strategies that will develop student's inquiry and problem-solving skills. Resources will be drawn from Let's Talk Science' website; a great resource for early years, kindergarten and primary grade educators with a suite of FREE classroom-ready, skills-based resources. Participants will explore scientific inquiries that enhance students¡¯ ability to observe, predict, sort and classify, compare and contrast, and draw conclusions.

STEM Design and Build Challenges in the Early Years – Grade 3 Classroom

  • Early Years – Grade 3 educators
  • Join colleagues for a professional learning session and participate in hands-on/minds-on strategies that will develop student's creativity and problem-solving skills as they relate to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Resources will be drawn from Let's Talk Science' website; a great resource for early years, kindergarten and primary grade educators with a suite of FREE classroom-ready, skills-based resources. Participants will explore and participate in design and build challenges that support the development of students¡¯ problem identification, designing, planning, creating, testing, and evaluating skills.

From Story to Design: Using children¡¯s literature to develop students¡¯ questioning and problem-solving skills

  • Early Years – Grade 3 educators
  • This professional learning session will provide Early Years and Kindergarten to Grade 3 educators the opportunity to discover and use effective learning strategies that develop students¡¯ questioning and problem-solving skills.
    Participants will:
    • Learn and engage in a Design and Build framework to formulate questions and solve problem scenarios presented through children¡¯s literature.
    • Learn how use science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to support students¡¯ literacy, communication, creativity, critical thinking and teamwork skills.
    • Meet and collaborate with colleagues and engage in meaningful discussions that support program planning in early STEM.

Inquiry and Technological Problem Solving as Contexts for Numeracy (Mathematics)

  • Early Years – Grade 3 educators
  • This professional learning session will provide Early Years and Kindergarten to Grade 3 educators opportunities to explore effective learning strategies that purposefully integrate skills and concepts in mathematics/numeracy with scientific inquiries and design and build challenges (technological problem solving).
    Participants will:
    • Gain hands-on experience with scientific inquiries and design and build (technological problem solving) challenges that integrate skills and concepts of mathematics in a meaningful way.
    • Learn how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) support development of children¡¯s communication, creative, critical thinking and collaboration skills.
    • Meet and collaborate with colleagues and engage in meaningful discussions that support program planning in early STEM education.

Using STEM to Address Curriculum Outcomes in Career Education

  • Grade 7 – Grade 12 educators
  • Approximately 70% of the top jobs in Canada require some form of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)?education. Let¡¯s Talk Science has developed a careers strategy to showcase interesting STEM careers. In this session, participants will learn how to address curriculum outcomes involving career education. Using Let's Talk Science' free careers section, participants will also?identify resources and opportunities?that fit their classroom and students. The option to include an exploration of our 360 virtual reality STEM careers environment, which allows students to ¡°step into¡± potential STEM careers, is available with this workshop.

Strategies to Improve Student Motivation, Active Learning and Questioning Skills

  • Grade 7 – Grade 12 educators
  • Let's Talk Science is your go-to place for free, curriculum-aligned, classroom-ready resources for Grades 7-12 science courses. CurioCity starting points, action projects, learning and questioning strategies are designed to help teachers motivate their students to learn the science behind everyday events and phenomena. This is a hands-on session that allows educators the opportunity to explore and identify resources that best fit their needs.

Citizen Science Projects for your Classroom

  • Grade 7 – Grade 12 educators
  • This Let¡¯s Talk Science workshop for grades 7-12 teachers explores how Let's Talk Science citizen science projects engage students in real life science and data collection. These projects also motivate students, address curriculum outcomes in biology, chemistry, environmental science and space science, and help develop collaboration and critical thinking skills.

Tomatosphere: An out of this world experience

  • Kindergarten – Grade 12 educators
  • Tomatosphere is a free program where Kindergarten to Grade 12 students across Canada use "space" tomato seeds to investigate the effects of outer space on seed germination. In this workshop, educators will explore the skills and process of scientific experimentation and best practices for the implementation of Tomatosphere in the classroom.?
